The Department of Mathematics of Hanshin University is the first department established within the science and engineering Division. We aim to train creative mathematicians with solid mathematical knowledge and practical skills and have produced numerous graduates studying at graduate schools or working at middle- and high-schools, private institutes, and IT firms.

Mathematics is the foundation of all sciences and the importance of mathematics is increasing in the overall industries with scientific and technological developments. While mathematics had been studied primarily due to pure academic curiosity in earlier times, the focus of the study has moved to the investigation of natural phenomena and its application to engineering in modern days. In recent years, mathematics has become a tool of industrial production, being applied beyond science and engineering to economics, finance, biology, international trade, politics, and industries.

The Department of Mathematics offers courses designed to systematically deliver a variety of mathematical principles and to cultivate mathematical thinking, ensuring that students have precise and logical thinking skills. Students will eventually possess fundamental mathematic skills as potential mathematicians as well as mathematical knowledge and competence needed to apply mathematical principles to other theories. To this end, our Department of Mathematics provides robust training through basic mathematical courses and special lectures to cover both classical and modern mathematics.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of our Department of Mathematics have diverse job opportunities. While in the past, most of them chose from mathematics education and computer science fields, an increasing numbers of our graduates are going into more diverse areas as society has become more complicated and diversified and therefore demands people with high-level analytical skills.

Some of our graduates participated in developing the digital geographic information system that displays the location of a person using satellite data even before the GPS was commercialized while others went on to major in biosciences at the graduate school and entered medical schools. There are graduates who have become middle- or high-schools after the completion of the graduate school of education or are teaching talented young students at education research institutes. One of our graduates who completed the doctorate course has become professors while there is a graduate who obtained a doctorate in topology in the U.S. There is a graduate who are studying at the graduate school of information security. Many of our graduates are still working in the field of computer sciences in the footsteps of their seniors.

In order to find work more easily in the computer industry, we recommend that students should take computer-related sciences as a double major or a minor and study IT-related subjects through students’ research association for computer science. Many of our graduates are running their own education institutes or working as instructors at private institutes, employed by banks and securities companies, insurance firms and other industries based on mathematics. A number of graduates are working at government agencies, public corporations, government-invested organizations, and private companies.

Students majoring in mathematics can go on to study mathematics education at the graduate school of education. After graduation, they can take the certificate exam to obtain a teacher’s certificate for the secondary school. Those who want to continue the study of mathematics can enter the graduate school to carry out in-depth research or complete a master’s or doctorate course at overseas schools. There are many opportunities for students majoring in mathematics: students can consider computer-related departments, specialized graduate schools of industrial technology, information security, and imaging and information technology where they can utilize mathematical knowledge.
